The Difference Between Epsom Salt and Magnesium Chloride

The Difference Between Epsom Salt and Magnesium Chloride

We know that Epsom Salt and Magnesium Chloride are both good for us and can help relax and soothe muscles but recently our customers have been asking us 'what exactly is the difference between Epsom Salt and Magnesium Chloride and which one should I be using?'

We love both Epsom Salt and Magnesium Chloride and we use both in our products. Our Salty Coconut Bath Soaks and our NEW Salty Bubble Baths both contain Epsom salt along with Australian sea salt while our NEW The Big Chill Magnesium Soak contains pure Magnesium Chloride Flakes.

So what is the difference?

Actually, Epsom Salts and Magnesium Chloride are both technically Magnesium Salts. Confused?

Simply put, Epsom Salts (Magnesium Sulphate) is magnesium bound to sulphates, and Magnesium Chloride is magnesium bound to chlorides.

So which one is better?

When Epsom Salt and Magnesium Chloride are added to warm water (ie. a bath) the bonds separate. Epsom Salt and Magnesium Chloride will both release similar levels of elemental magnesium into the water which will be absorbed by the body transdermally, however, Epsom Salt will also release Sulphates and Magnesium Chloride will release Chlorides. Sulphates and Chlorides both play important but different roles within the body.

So at the end of the day, both Epsom Salt and Magnesium Chloride are equally beneficial to the body providing different essential elements.

You can't go wrong with alternating between the two which will provide your body with all three minerals. But if you are trying to decide between our products, for general relaxation use our Salty Coconut Bath Soaks or Salty Bubble Bath or for a more intense hit of Magnesium after a workout use The Big Chill Magnesium Soak.
